I regret that I can't manage to play regularly these days, but I wanted to put some info on the web (and to try hard at playing again).
About Mah Jongg
It is said that in China, Mah Jongg has been played one way for 1000 years; in the Western world, Mah Jongg has been played for one year in 1000 ways.
Introduction
Mah Jongg is a game for four players.
Equipment
Tiles, chinese dice, wind discs, a wind dice and scoring sticks or coins.
Tiles
The Chinese Mah Jongg is played with 136 tiles. They consist of
-
9 x 4 Bamboo tiles
-
9 x 4 Circle tiles
-
9 x 4 Character tiles
-
4 x 4 Wind tiles
-
3 x 4 Dragon tiles
Formalities
Choosing Places
- The players sit down at the four sides of the table.
- The oldest player shuffles the four wind-discs and places them on the table face down forming a row.
- The player right of him tells which end of the row is the head.
- The player right of him throws two dice. He counts the result through the players counterclockwise beginning with him/herself. The resulting is the preliminary Eastwind.
- The preliminary Eastwind throws two dice. He counts the result through the players counterclockwise beginning with him/herself.
- The resluting player takes the first disc in the row, the player right of him the next, and so on, until all players have a disc.
- The players take seats according to the winds on their discs. The thus determined Eastwind player takes the place of the preliminary Eastwind. Keep in mind that compared to a western compass, east and west are swapped.
- The Eastwind is now
The Wall
- The 136 tiles are placed face down and shuffled.
- Each player selects 34 pieces at random and arranges them in front of him face down in a row seventeen tiles long and two high.
- These four rows are then shoved forward to form a hollow square in the middle of the table to represent a Chinese city wall. There must be no gap in the corners, the walls have to touch.
Rules
There are many variations of the rules, so I put together the most important additions and differences to the traditional chinese rules.
I assume you know about some basic Mah Jongg terms. If not, you may want to visit the Mah Jong Museum.
- Every discard is announced as it is put on the table. Discards are to be arranged on the table in a manner that allows every player to easily recognize who discarded which tile, and in what order.
- Every player can call a discard for a Pong, Kong or Mah Jongg, but only the player next in turn may call for a Chow (unless he calls the Chow for Mah Jongg).
- If a player adds the fourth matching tile to a Pong already on the table, this tile may be called for Mah Jongg.
- If no player has made Mah Jongg yet, and a player's draw from the would cause it to have less than 14 tiles (including the loose tiles), the game ends.
- There are no special hands.
